Napoleon II

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Napoleon II

Napoleon II, born on March twentieth, eighteen eleven, was the son of the renowned Emperor Napoleon I and Empress Marie Louise, the daughter of Emperor Francis I of Austria. Known as the Prince Imperial of France and King of Rome from birth, he briefly held the title of Emperor of the French for a mere two days in eighteen fifteen following his father's second abdication.

Despite his noble lineage, Napoleon II never truly ruled France. After his father's fall from power, he spent the remainder of his life in Vienna, where he was known as Franz, Duke of Reichstadt. This title was granted to him by his grandfather in eighteen eighteen, reflecting his connection to the Habsburg dynasty.

His life was marked by the shadow of his father's legacy and the political turmoil of the time. Although he was named as a successor by Napoleon I during his abdication in April eighteen fourteen, the coalition victors refused to recognize him as the rightful heir. Ultimately, he succumbed to tuberculosis at the young age of twenty-one, leaving behind a complex legacy.

Posthumously, he earned the affectionate nickname L'Aiglon, meaning 'the Eaglet,' symbolizing both his royal heritage and the unfulfilled potential of his brief claim to the throne. His cousin, Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, would later establish the Second French Empire in eighteen fifty-two, ruling as Emperor Napoleon III.
