Natalia Gherman, born on March twentieth, nineteen sixty-nine, in Chișinău, is a distinguished Moldovan politician, philologist, and diplomat. She currently holds the position of executive director of the United Nations' Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate, a role she has embraced since two thousand twenty-three. Gherman's career is marked by her commitment to international diplomacy and her significant contributions to Moldova's foreign relations.
The daughter of Mircea Snegur, the first president of Moldova, Gherman pursued her education at Moldova State University and furthered her studies at King's College London. Her diplomatic journey began with various roles within the Moldovan diplomatic service, culminating in her appointment as ambassador to Austria and permanent representative to the OSCE from two thousand two to two thousand six, followed by her ambassadorship to Sweden, Norway, and Finland from two thousand six to two thousand nine.
In two thousand nine, she ascended to the role of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, where she served as the Chief Negotiator on the Moldova–European Union Association Agreement until two thousand thirteen. Gherman's political influence grew as she became the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova from May two thousand thirteen to January two thousand sixteen. Notably, she briefly served as the acting prime minister of Moldova in mid two thousand fifteen.
In February two thousand sixteen, Gherman was nominated as Moldova's candidate for Secretary-General of the United Nations during the selection process for Ban Ki-moon's successor.
