Patrick J. Kennedy

Patrick J. Kennedy, born on July 14, 1967, is a distinguished American retired politician and a passionate advocate for mental health. He made history as one of the first two Generation X members of Congress when he took office in 1995, representing Rhode Island's 1st congressional district as a member of the Democratic Party. His political journey began in 1989 when he was elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives, becoming the youngest member of the Kennedy family to hold elected office.

Throughout his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 3, 1995, to January 3, 2011, Kennedy was a prominent figure, serving on the Armed Services and Natural Resources Committees before his appointment to the Appropriations Committee. He was re-elected multiple times, showcasing his commitment to his constituents and the issues that mattered to them.

As a member of the Kennedy family, he is the second son of Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy and a nephew of former U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. His family legacy in politics is significant, and at the time of his father's passing in August two thousand nine, Patrick was the last remaining Kennedy in elective office in Washington. His decision not to seek re-election in two thousand ten marked a historic moment, as it was the first time since nineteen forty-seven that no Kennedy held an elected position.

In addition to his political career, Kennedy has been a strong advocate for mental health issues. He co-founded One Mind, a nonprofit organization dedicated to mental health advocacy. In two thousand seventeen, he was appointed by President Donald Trump to the Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission, further emphasizing his commitment to addressing critical health challenges.
