Pedro Gastão of Orléans-Braganza

Pedro Gastão of Orléans-Braganza, born on February nineteenth, nineteen thirteen, was a prominent Brazilian prince and a significant figure in the historical narrative of the Brazilian monarchy. As the eldest son of Pedro de Alcântara, Prince of Grão-Pará, and Countess Elisabeth Dobrzensky of Dobrzenicz, he was born into a lineage steeped in royal tradition during a time when the Brazilian imperial family was in exile.

Throughout his life, Pedro Gastão maintained a steadfast belief in his dynastic rights, rejecting his father's 1908 renunciation made to pursue a non-dynastic marriage. Following the death of his father in nineteen forty, he asserted his claim to the imperial legacy, positioning himself as the symbolic head of the Petrópolis branch of the House of Orléans-Braganza, a claim that stood in opposition to the rival Vassouras branch led by his cousins, Pedro Henrique and later Luiz.

His royal connections extended beyond Brazil, linking him to various former European ruling houses. Pedro Gastão was the uncle of Duarte Pio, Duke of Braganza, the pretender to the Portuguese throne, and Henri, Count of Paris, the claimant to the French throne. Additionally, he was the grandfather of Philip, Hereditary Prince of Yugoslavia, who is the heir apparent to the defunct Yugoslav throne.
