Perctarit

Perctarit, born in the year six hundred forty-five, emerged as a pivotal figure in the history of the Lombards during the seventh century. As the first Catholic king of the Lombards, he navigated the complexities of a religiously divided kingdom, showcasing his leadership from six hundred sixty-one to six hundred sixty-two, and again from six hundred seventy-one to six hundred eighty-eight.

His reign is marked by significant achievements, including the establishment of Catholicism as the official religion of his realm. This monumental decision not only unified his subjects under a common faith but also reflected his commitment to fostering a cohesive society amidst the prevailing divisions.

Perctarit's legacy is further enriched by his act of mercy towards an invading leader, a decision that demonstrated his diplomatic acumen and desire for peace. Additionally, he commissioned various construction projects around the capital, contributing to the cultural and architectural landscape of his kingdom.

As one of the two sons of Aripert I, Perctarit ascended to power following the assassination of Rodoald. He shared the throne with his elder brother Godepert, both hailing from the Bavarian dynasty of the Lombards, which traced its lineage back to Garibald I.
