A native of New York City, she embarked on her artistic journey in theater after graduating from Boston University, making her mark in a production of Richard III in nineteen seventy-three.

Her Broadway debut came in nineteen seventy-five when she took on a supporting role and served as the understudy for the title character in Yentl. This early experience paved the way for her feature film debut in Michael Cimino's epic Western Heaven's Gate in nineteen eighty, followed by a series of notable supporting roles in acclaimed films such as Sophie's Choice in nineteen eighty-two, Moonstruck in nineteen eighty-seven, and Postcards from the Edge in nineteen ninety.
