Historical accounts, including those by Paul the Deacon, suggest that Rodoald reigned for five years and seven days, although this claim is likely exaggerated. Most historians agree that his actual reign lasted closer to five months and seven days, casting doubt on the stability of his rule.

In the wake of Rodoald's assassination, Aripert emerged as a rival claimant to the throne, gaining the backing of the Catholic Church, which had been opposed to the Arian monarchy. This shift in power dynamics underscores the complex interplay between religion and politics in Lombard Italy.
