Roger I of Sicily, known as Ruggero in Italian and Rujār in Arabic, was a prominent Norman nobleman born around the year one thousand thirty-one. He earned the titles 'Roger Bosso' and 'Grand Count Roger' during his remarkable life, which spanned until June twenty-second, one thousand one.
A member of the illustrious House of Hauteville, Roger embarked on several military campaigns against the Emirate of Sicily, beginning in one thousand sixty-one. His military prowess and strategic acumen led to his brother, Robert Guiscard, Duke of Apulia, investing him with a portion of Sicily in one thousand seventy-one.
By one thousand ninety, Roger had successfully conquered the entire island of Sicily, further extending his influence by capturing Malta in one thousand ninety-one. The state he established would later merge with the Duchy of Apulia in one thousand one hundred twenty-seven, ultimately evolving into the Kingdom of Sicily by one thousand one hundred thirty.
Roger's legacy continued through his male descendants, who ruled Sicily until one thousand one hundred ninety-four, ensuring that his impact on the region would be felt for generations to come.
