Roy E. Disney

Roy E. Disney, born on January 10, 1930, in Los Angeles, was a prominent American businessman, media executive, and filmmaker. He was deeply intertwined with the legacy of the Walt Disney Company, serving as a senior executive and chairman of its animation division, roles that connected him to his uncle, Walt Disney, and his father, Roy O. Disney.

After graduating from Pomona College in 1951, Disney began his career at Walt Disney Productions as an assistant director and producer. His tenure at the company was marked by significant events, including the ousting of top executives Ron W. Miller in 1984 and Michael Eisner in 2005. By the time of his passing, he held over sixteen million shares of the company, approximately one percent of its total, and continued to serve as a consultant and director emeritus on the board.

As the last active member of the Disney family within the company, Roy E. Disney was often compared to his illustrious relatives. In 2006, Forbes magazine estimated his personal fortune at one point two billion dollars, highlighting his significant impact on the media landscape.

In addition to his business acumen, Disney was an accomplished yachtsman, known for his participation in prestigious sailing events such as the Transpacific Yacht Race and the Newport Bermuda Race, where he achieved notable success. Sadly, he passed away from stomach cancer on December 16, 2009, after a courageous battle with the disease that lasted over a year.
