Sancho III of Castile

Sancho III, known as el Deseado, was born in the year one thousand one hundred thirty-four and ascended to the throne as King of Castile and Toledo in the year one thousand one hundred fifty-seven. His reign, though brief, lasted until his untimely death on thirty-first August one thousand one hundred fifty-eight. Sancho was the cherished son of Alfonso VII of León and Castile and Berengaria of Barcelona, arriving after eight long years of his parents' childless marriage, which earned him the affectionate nickname.

During his short time as king, Sancho III witnessed significant developments, including the founding of the Order of Calatrava, a military order that played a crucial role in the Reconquista. His reign also saw the pivotal Treaty of Sahagún being negotiated in May one thousand one hundred fifty-eight, marking an important moment in the political landscape of the time.

Sancho's legacy continued through his son, Alfonso VIII, who succeeded him and would go on to further shape the history of Castile. Despite the brevity of his rule, Sancho III's impact on the kingdom and its military orders remains a notable part of his historical narrative.
