Severus Alexander

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Severus Alexander

Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander, born on the first of October in the year two hundred eight, ascended to the throne as Roman emperor at the tender age of thirteen. He succeeded his cousin, Emperor Elagabalus, who had met a violent end at the hands of his own guards. Both emperors were grandsons of Julia Maesa, a significant figure in the political machinations of their time.

During his reign from two hundred twenty-two to two hundred thirty-five, Alexander became known for his efforts to maintain peace within the empire. His tenure marked the longest reign of a sole emperor since Antoninus Pius, characterized by relative prosperity despite the looming threats from the Sassanid Empire and incursions from Germanic tribes.

In an attempt to navigate these challenges, Alexander favored diplomacy and bribery over military confrontation, a strategy that ultimately alienated many within the Roman army. This discontent culminated in a conspiracy that led to his assassination, alongside his mother, Julia Avita Mamaea, and his advisors. His death heralded the onset of the Crisis of the Third Century, a tumultuous period marked by civil war and economic collapse.

Known affectionately as Mamaeas, a nod to his mother, Alexander's legacy is one of a young ruler caught in the complexities of imperial politics, whose reign, though peaceful, was overshadowed by the chaos that followed his demise.
