Shinjirō Koizumi, born on April fourteenth, nineteen eighty-one, is a prominent Japanese politician currently serving as the Minister of Defense since October twenty twenty-five. He has a rich political history, having previously held the position of Minister of the Environment from September twenty nineteen to October twenty twenty-one, and Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for a brief period in May twenty twenty-five to October twenty twenty-five. A member of the House of Representatives for the Liberal Democratic Party, he has represented Kanagawa since two thousand nine.
Koizumi is the second son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and the younger brother of actor Kotaro Koizumi. After completing his university education, he began his career as a researcher at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. His political journey began as a Young Leader at the Pacific Forum CSIS, and he later served as a political secretary for his father during the latter part of his prime ministerial term.
In the two thousand nine elections, Shinjirō was elected to the House of Representatives, taking over the seat that his father had held for over thirty-five years. Following the election of the Abe Government in two thousand twelve, he was appointed Vice-Minister for Reconstruction, where he focused on the recovery efforts in the northeastern region of Japan affected by the devastating tsunami and nuclear disaster in March two thousand eleven. Notably, he publicly opposed his father's stance on nuclear energy.
In two thousand nineteen, he was appointed Minister of the Environment by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, a position he maintained under Yoshihide Suga's administration starting in September twenty twenty. Koizumi endorsed Taro Kono during the twenty twenty-one LDP leadership election, which ultimately led to Fumio Kishida becoming prime minister. After stepping down from the cabinet, he returned to backbench politics.
In September twenty twenty-four, Koizumi ran for the LDP presidency, finishing third in the initial voting round. Following the LDP's loss of majority in the twenty twenty-four general election, he resigned from his role as head of the party's Election Strategy committee. After a stint at the LDP's political reform headquarters, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture by Shigeru Ishiba in May twenty twenty-five. Following Ishiba's resignation announcement, Koizumi contested the October twenty twenty-five LDP presidential election but lost to Takaichi in the runoff, who subsequently appointed him as Minister of Defense.
