A member of the Vukanović dynasty, he is celebrated for founding the Nemanjić dynasty, which laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the Serbian Empire. His reign was marked by significant contributions to Serbian culture, history, and the establishment of the national church.

Throughout his three decades of leadership, Nemanja navigated a landscape of warfare and diplomacy, notably during the Third Norman invasion of the Balkans from one thousand one hundred eighty-five to one thousand one hundred eighty-six. This period was crucial in consolidating Serbia's identity, distinguishing it from both Western and Byzantine influences. In one thousand one hundred ninety-six, he abdicated in favor of his middle son, Stefan Nemanjić, who would ascend as the first King of Serbia.

After stepping down, Nemanja sought a life of spiritual devotion at Mount Athos, where he became a monk under the name Simeon.
