Theudebald

Theudebald, born in five hundred thirty-four, was a monarch who ruled over Metz, Rheims, or Austrasia from five hundred forty-eight until his untimely death in five hundred fifty-five. As the son of Theudebert I and Deuteria, he was a great-grandson of Clovis I, the first king of the Franks and the unifier of the Frankish tribes. His ascension to the throne came at the tender age of thirteen, a time marked by his ill health and the loyalty of the nobility, which helped maintain peace during his minority.

In a strategic move to strengthen ties between Austrasia and Lombardy, Theudebald married Waldrada, the daughter of the Lombard king Wacho and his step-aunt. Despite his efforts, he struggled to retain the northern Italian conquests of his father. The situation escalated in five hundred fifty-two when the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I dispatched an army led by Narses, while the Gothic king Teia sought assistance from the Franks. Although Theudebald declined to intervene directly, he permitted two Alemanni chieftains to enter Italy, leading to a disastrous defeat for the Franks at Casilinum.

In five hundred fifty, Theudebald convened the Council of Toul, prompted by the actions of Nicetius, the bishop of Trier, who had begun excommunicating Frankish aristocrats for marrying within prohibited degrees of consanguinity. This council was a significant event in his reign, reflecting the intertwining of politics and religion during this period.

After a prolonged illness, Theudebald passed away in five hundred fifty-five. His death marked the end of his family's direct rule, as his realm was ultimately united with the kingdoms of his granduncle Clotaire I, who would soon become the king of all the Franks.
