Titus

Titus, born in the year forty-one, was a prominent figure in Roman history, serving as emperor from seventy-nine to eighty-one AD. He was a member of the Flavian dynasty and made history as the first Roman emperor to succeed his biological father, Vespasian, following his death. Titus's ascent to power was marked by his military prowess, particularly during the First Jewish–Roman War, where he played a crucial role under his father's command in Judaea.

His military career was highlighted by the siege and capture of Jerusalem in seventy AD, a significant achievement that led to the destruction of the city and the Second Temple. This victory earned him a triumph, commemorated by the enduring Arch of Titus. Before his imperial reign, he also served as the prefect of the Praetorian Guard and was known for his controversial relationship with the Jewish queen Berenice.

Upon becoming emperor, Titus was well-regarded for his leadership and was praised by historians such as Suetonius. His reign, though brief, was marked by notable accomplishments, including the completion of the Colosseum and his compassionate response to disasters, such as the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in seventy-nine AD and a devastating fire in Rome in eighty AD.

Tragically, Titus's reign was cut short when he succumbed to a fever on the thirteenth of September in eighty-one AD. His legacy was solidified when he was deified by the Roman Senate, and he was succeeded by his younger brother, Domitian.
