Over the span of seventeen seasons, Gonzalez made an indelible mark on the sport, primarily with the Kansas City Chiefs, who drafted him in the first round of the nineteen ninety-seven NFL draft. He dedicated his first twelve seasons to the Chiefs before concluding his career with five seasons at the Atlanta Falcons.

Regarded as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, Gonzalez holds the record for the most receptions and receiving yards by a tight end, while ranking second in receiving touchdowns. His exceptional performance on the field earned him an impressive fourteen Pro Bowl selections and six first-team All-Pro selections, both of which are records for his position. Known for his durability, he participated in two hundred seventy of two hundred seventy-two regular season games and remarkably lost only two fumbles throughout one thousand three hundred twenty-seven touches.
