Robert Matthew Van Winkle, widely recognized as Vanilla Ice, was born on October 31, 1967, in Dallas, Texas, and raised in Miami, Florida. He made history as the first solo white rapper to achieve significant commercial success, particularly with his iconic hit "Ice Ice Baby," released in 1990. This track not only topped the Billboard charts but also marked a pivotal moment in music, breaking down racial barriers in the rap and hip-hop genres for future artists, including the renowned Eminem.
Vanilla Ice's career took off with the release of his debut album, Hooked, under Ichiban Records. However, it was his subsequent contract with SBK Records that propelled him into the limelight, leading to the re-release of his album as To the Extreme. This album became the fastest-selling hip hop album of all time. Following this success, he released a live album, Extremely Live, in 1991 and made a memorable cameo in the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, performing the co-written "Ninja Rap." He also starred in the film Cool as Ice, which, despite its box office failure, featured the single "Cool as Ice (Everybody Get Loose)" alongside Naomi Campbell.
Despite his rapid rise to fame, Vanilla Ice faced numerous media controversies regarding his background, which led to regrets about his business dealings with SBK Records, particularly concerning the dissemination of fabricated biographical information. His second studio album, Mind Blowin', released in 1994, showcased a significant image change but did not achieve commercial success. He later explored the underground rap rock scene and played in a local grunge band before releasing the nu metal album Hard to Swallow in 1998, followed by the independently produced Bi-Polar in 2001 and Platinum Underground in 2005.
In the 2000s, Vanilla Ice transitioned into television, appearing on reality shows such as The Surreal Life. He found a new platform as the host of The Vanilla Ice Project on the DIY Network, which aired for nine seasons until 2019. In 2022, he launched another home improvement show, The Vanilla Ice Home Show. Beyond entertainment, he has also pursued interests in motocross racing and real estate, showcasing his diverse talents and adaptability in various fields.
