Władysław Odonic

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Władysław Odonic

Władysław Odonic, born in the year one thousand one hundred ninety, was a prominent aristocrat in medieval Poland. He was the son of Duke Odon of Kalisz and Viacheslava, the daughter of Prince Yaroslav Osmomysl of Halych. His lineage connected him to notable figures, and he was likely named after either his paternal uncle, Władysław III Spindleshanks, or his ancestor, Władysław I Herman.

His political career was marked by a series of significant titles and territories. Władysław served as the Duke of Kalisz from twelve hundred seven to twelve hundred seventeen, and briefly held the title of Duke of Poznań in twelve hundred sixteen to twelve hundred seventeen. He ruled Ujście in twelve hundred twenty-three and Nakło from twelve hundred twenty-five, eventually becoming the Duke of all Greater Poland from twelve hundred twenty-nine until twelve hundred thirty-four.

After twelve hundred thirty-four, Władysław's dominion was reduced to the northern and eastern regions of the Warta River. Some historians suggest that he may have lost control of Ujście and Nakło shortly before his death. His reign was characterized by both territorial expansion and the challenges of maintaining power in a fragmented political landscape.

Władysław was known by the nickname 'Plwacz,' which translates to 'the Spitter' in English, a moniker that appeared in chronicles from the thirteenth century. The origins of this nickname remain unclear, with theories suggesting it may have been due to a throat ailment or poor manners. Additionally, he was referred to as 'Odonic,' a variation of his patronymic Odowic, meaning 'son of Odon,' though the reasons for this persistent misnomer are also unknown.
