William III of the Netherlands

William III of the Netherlands, born on February nineteenth, eighteen seventeen, was a prominent figure in European history, serving as King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg from eighteen forty-nine until his death in eighteen ninety. His reign of forty-one years makes him the second-longest reigning monarch in Dutch history, surpassed only by his daughter, Wilhelmina.

The son of King William II and Anna Pavlovna of Russia, William ascended to the title of Prince of Orange following the abdication of his grandfather, William I, in eighteen forty. Upon the death of his father in eighteen forty-nine, he became king, navigating the complexities of his dual roles in both the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

In eighteen thirty-nine, William married his cousin Sophie of Württemberg, with whom he had three sons: William, Maurice, and Alexander, all of whom sadly predeceased him. After Sophie's passing in eighteen seventy-seven, he wed Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont in eighteen seventy-nine, and they welcomed a daughter, Wilhelmina, who would later succeed him on the Dutch throne.

William III's legacy is marked not only by his lengthy reign but also by his status as the last agnatic descendant of Otto I, Count of Nassau. Following his death, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg passed to his distant cousin, Adolphe. Notably, as of twenty twenty-six, he remains the last Dutch monarch to have died while still on the throne, as all subsequent rulers have chosen to abdicate in favor of their heirs.
