Xianfeng Emperor

The Xianfeng Emperor, born Yizhu on July 17, 1831, was the eighth emperor of the Qing dynasty and the seventh to rule over China proper. He ascended to the throne in 1850, inheriting an empire fraught with turmoil and crisis. His reign was marked by significant conflicts, including the devastating Taiping Rebellion, which erupted shortly after his ascension and led to the fall of Nanjing in 1853.

In addition to the Taiping Rebellion, the Xianfeng Emperor faced the Nian Rebellion in the north and various ethnic uprisings in the south, such as the Miao and Panthay Rebellions. These revolts caused immense suffering and loss of life, with millions perishing as the Qing dynasty struggled to maintain control over its territories.

The Xianfeng Emperor's rule also coincided with the Second Opium War, during which Qing forces suffered significant defeats. The resulting Treaty of Tientsin and Treaty of Aigun ceded large portions of Manchuria to the Russian Empire. In 1860, as Anglo-French forces invaded Beijing and burned the Old Summer Palace, the emperor was forced to flee to Jehol, where he would spend his final days.

His health deteriorated rapidly amid the mounting losses faced by the Qing dynasty, and he passed away on August 22, 1861, at the young age of thirty. He was succeeded by his six-year-old son, who became the Tongzhi Emperor. On his deathbed, the Xianfeng Emperor appointed a regency council to guide his successor, but shortly thereafter, a coup led by Empress Dowager Cixi and others would change the course of Qing governance.
