Zhang Yimou

Zhang Yimou, born on April 2, 1950, is a prominent Chinese filmmaker renowned for his significant contributions to cinema as a director, actor, screenwriter, film producer, and cinematographer. A leading figure of China's Fifth Generation directors, he has established himself as one of the most successful filmmakers globally.

After graduating from the Beijing Film Academy, Zhang began his career as a cinematographer at the Guangxi Film Studio in 1982. He made his acting debut in the film Old Well in 1987, earning the Best Actor award at the Tokyo International Film Festival. His directorial debut came with Red Sorghum in 1988, which won the prestigious Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Zhang's artistic vision has led him to direct the opening and closing ceremonies of both the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games. Since 2004, he has collaborated with local governments across China to promote tourism through the “Impression” series of outdoor live stage productions, starting with Impression Liu Sanjie in Yangshuo. Despite his official affiliations, he has occasionally faced challenges with Chinese censors throughout his career.

His films often explore the resilience of ordinary people, as seen in To Live and Not One Less.
