13th Dalai Lama

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of 13th Dalai Lama

The 13th Dalai Lama, born on February twelfth, eighteen seventy-six, was a pivotal figure in Tibetan history, known for his leadership during a time of significant upheaval. He ascended to the throne during the decline of the Qing dynasty and is often referred to as 'the Great Thirteenth' for his efforts in reestablishing Tibet's national independence and implementing crucial reforms aimed at modernization.

Recognized as the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama in eighteen seventy-eight, he was brought to Lhasa, where he received his pre-novice vows from the Panchen Lama, Tenpai Wangchuk. The following year, he was enthroned at the Potala Palace, although he did not take on political responsibilities until eighteen ninety-five, when he reached maturity.

Thubten Gyatso was not only a spiritual leader but also an astute politician and intellectual reformer. His tenure was marked by significant efforts to restore Tibet's geopolitical standing following the British expedition to Tibet. He worked diligently to restore discipline within monastic life and expanded the role of lay officials, ensuring that power was not overly concentrated in the hands of the monastic community.
