4th Dalai Lama

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of 4th Dalai Lama

The 4th Dalai Lama, Yonten Gyatso, was born in 1589 in Tümed, during the Earth-Ox year of the Tibetan calendar. His birth is recorded on the 30th day of the 12th month, although some sources suggest he was born in the 1st month of the same year. This unique aspect of his birth highlights the blend of cultural influences that shaped his identity.

As the son of Tsultrim Choeje, the Khan of the Chokur tribe, Yonten Gyatso was of Mongol descent. He was the great-grandson of Altan Khan of the Tümed Mongols and his second wife, PhaKhen Nula. This lineage makes him a notable figure in Tibetan history, as he stands out as the only non-Tibetan to be recognized as Dalai Lama, aside from the 6th Dalai Lama, who was of Monpa heritage.

His tenure as the 4th Dalai Lama lasted from 1589 until his passing in 1617. During this period, he contributed to the political and spiritual landscape of Tibet, navigating the complexities of his dual heritage. His life and legacy continue to be a subject of interest for historians and scholars alike.
