A Tribe Called Quest, an iconic American hip hop group, emerged from Queens, New York City, in 1985. The original lineup featured the talented rapper and main producer Q-Tip, alongside rapper Phife Dawg, DJ and co-producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and rapper Jarobi White. As co-founders of the Native Tongues collective in 1988, they played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of alternative hip hop and jazz rap.
Their debut album, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, released in 1990, garnered critical acclaim, achieving the first five 'mic' rating in The Source's history. This was followed by their groundbreaking jazz-infused album, The Low End Theory, in 1991, which significantly influenced the 1990s alternative hip hop scene. The group continued to build on their success with the equally impactful Midnight Marauders in 1993, and their first Billboard 200 chart-topping album, Beats, Rhymes and Life, in 1996.
After releasing their fifth album, The Love Movement, in 1998, the group disbanded but reunited in 2006 for sporadic tours. Their final album, We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service, was released in 2016, topping the Billboard 200 and receiving critical praise. This album featured posthumous contributions from Phife Dawg, who passed away eight months prior to its release.
A Tribe Called Quest stands as the most commercially successful act within the Native Tongues collective, with all six of their albums certified gold or platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Their influence extends beyond hip hop, inspiring the neo soul genre. Notable tracks include 'Can I Kick It?', 'Scenario', 'Award Tour', 'Electric Relaxation', and 'Bonita Applebum', along with collaborations such as 'Buddy' with De La Soul and 'Rumble in the Jungle' with Fugees.
The group has received numerous accolades, including the Founders Award at the 2005 Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Awards, recognition at the 4th VH1 Hip Hop Honors, and the 2017 Brit Award for International Group. In 2024, A Tribe Called Quest was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, solidifying their legacy in music history.
