Aafia Siddiqui, born on March 2, 1972, in Pakistan, is a prominent neuroscientist and educator whose life took a dramatic turn following her conviction in the United States. Siddiqui gained international notoriety after being sentenced to eighty-six years in prison for attempted murder and other felonies. Currently, she is incarcerated at the Federal Medical Center, Carswell, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Her academic journey began in the United States, where she pursued her studies from 1990 onwards. Siddiqui earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1995, followed by a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Brandeis University in 2001. After the September 11 attacks, she returned to Pakistan, only to be embroiled in controversy when Khalid Sheikh Mohammad named her as a courier and financier for al-Qaeda, leading to her placement on the FBI's Seeking Information – Terrorism list, making her the first woman to be featured.

In a twist of fate, Siddiqui reappeared in Ghazni, Afghanistan, five years later, where she was arrested by Afghan police and subsequently questioned by the FBI. During her detention, she claimed to have been abducted and imprisoned, a statement she later retracted. While in custody, she allegedly shot at U.S. personnel, resulting in her being shot in return. Following her extradition to the United States, she faced charges of assault and attempted murder, which she vehemently denied. On February 3, 2010, she was convicted, leading to her lengthy prison sentence.
