Aatsista-Mahkan, born in 1833, was a prominent chief of the Siksika First Nation, known for his leadership and dedication to his people. He was the son of Akamukai, also known as Many Swans, who led the Biters band. Following his father's passing in 1871, Aatsista-Mahkan assumed control of the band, continuing a legacy of strength and compassion.
Throughout his life, Aatsista-Mahkan was celebrated for his generosity and kindness. He was deeply committed to the welfare of his family and community, earning the respect and loyalty of those around him. His leadership style was characterized by a protective nature, ensuring the safety and well-being of his people.
In 1877, Aatsista-Mahkan played a significant role as a signatory to Treaty 7, a pivotal agreement for the Siksika Nation. Despite this formal recognition, he and his people remained dedicated to their traditional way of life, following the bison until 1881. It was only then that they were designated to settle on a reserve located sixty miles east of present-day Calgary, Alberta.
