Aavo Pikkuus, born on November twenty-third, nineteen fifty-four, is a distinguished retired Estonian cyclist, businessperson, and racing automobile driver. He gained prominence as a member of the Soviet Union cycling team, contributing to their remarkable victories in the 100 km team time trial at the 1976 Summer Olympics and the 1977 UCI Road World Championships. Pikkuus also showcased his talent by securing second place at the world championships in both nineteen seventy-five and nineteen seventy-eight.
Between nineteen seventy-four and nineteen seventy-seven, Pikkuus dominated the national cycling scene, clinching four Soviet titles in road racing. His prowess was further highlighted when he finished third at the multistage Peace Race in nineteen seventy-five, followed by an impressive individual victory in nineteen seventy-seven. Additionally, he excelled in team competitions, winning the Peace Race in nineteen seventy-five and from nineteen seventy-seven to nineteen seventy-nine. Notably, in nineteen seventy-seven, he led the race from start to finish.
Pikkuus's achievements extended beyond cycling; he triumphed in the Circuit de la Sarthe in nineteen seventy-seven and the Giro delle Regione in nineteen seventy-eight. After retiring from cycling in nineteen eighty-one, he transitioned to auto rally, where he found success, including winning the Saaremaa Rally in nineteen eighty-three. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to own a car shop, which unfortunately burned down in the nineteen nineties.
In recognition of his contributions to sports, Pikkuus became an honorary member of the Estonian Olympic Committee and was honored as the Estonian Sportspersonality of the Year five times from nineteen seventy-four to nineteen seventy-eight. His accolades continued in two thousand one when he was awarded the Order of the Estonian Red Cross. Aavo Pikkuus is married and is a proud father of three daughters and a son.
