Abbakka Chowta

Rani Abbakka Chowta, born in 1525, was a remarkable figure in Indian history, known for her indomitable spirit and fierce resistance against colonial powers. As the first Tuluva Queen of Ullal, she belonged to the Chowta dynasty, which ruled over parts of coastal Karnataka, India. The capital of her kingdom was Puttige, while Ullal served as a vital subsidiary capital, strategically positioned along the coast.

During the latter half of the sixteenth century, Abbakka Chowta faced numerous attempts by the Portuguese to capture Ullal. Her unwavering courage and tactical prowess allowed her to repel these attacks for over four decades, earning her the title of Abhaya Rani, or the fearless queen. Her legacy as a warrior and leader is celebrated, as she stands out as one of the earliest Indians to challenge European colonialism.

Abbakka's contributions to the fight for freedom have led her to be recognized as one of India's first woman freedom fighters. In Karnataka, she is honored alongside other legendary women warriors such as Rani Kittur Chennamma and Onake Obavva, who are revered for their patriotism and bravery. Her story continues to inspire generations, symbolizing the strength and resilience of women in the face of adversity.
