Abbas III

Abbas III, born in 1732, was a significant figure in the tumultuous history of Iran, being the son of Shah Tahmasp II and Shahpari Begum of the Safavid dynasty. His reign, albeit brief, began on September seventh of the same year when he was appointed as the nominal ruler of Iran following the deposition of his father by Nader Khan, who would later become known as Nader Shah.

During his short rule from 1732 to 1736, Abbas III was overshadowed by Nader Khan, who held the real power as the deputy of state and viceroy. The young Abbas's reign came to an abrupt end in March 1736 when Nader Khan crowned himself as Nader Shah, marking the official conclusion of the Safavid dynasty.

After his deposition, Abbas was imprisoned alongside his father in Sabzevar, Khorasan. The political landscape shifted dramatically in 1738 when Nader Shah embarked on a campaign to Afghanistan and India, leaving his son Reza Qoli Mirza Afshar in charge. Rumors of Nader's death prompted Reza to consider claiming the crown, leading to a tragic turn of events.

In a bid to prevent a potential uprising that could restore Tahmasp II and his sons to power, Mohammed Hosein Khan Qajar, who was responsible for supervising Abbas and his father in captivity, executed Tahmasp and his sons, including the young Abbas, likely in May or June of 1739. This brutal act sealed the fate of the Safavid legacy and marked a dark chapter in Iranian history.
