Abbas Kiarostami

Abbas Kiarostami, born on June twenty-second, nineteen forty, was a multifaceted Iranian filmmaker whose influence extended beyond cinema into poetry, photography, and visual arts. Active in the film industry since the nineteen seventies, Kiarostami produced over forty films, including shorts and documentaries, establishing himself as a pivotal figure in the Iranian New Wave movement.

His acclaimed works include the Koker trilogy, 'Close-Up', 'The Wind Will Carry Us', and 'Taste of Cherry', the latter of which won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in nineteen ninety-seven. Kiarostami's films often feature child protagonists and are characterized by their documentary-style narratives, rural settings, and philosophical dialogues, frequently incorporating elements of Persian poetry.

In his later career, Kiarostami ventured outside Iran, directing 'Certified Copy' in Italy and 'Like Someone in Love' in Japan. His films 'Where Is the Friend's House?', 'Close-Up', and 'The Wind Will Carry Us' were recognized among the one hundred best foreign films in a 2018 BBC Culture poll, while 'Close-Up' was also celebrated as one of the fifty greatest movies of all time in the 2012 Sight & Sound poll.
