Abbasgulu Bakikhanov, born on June twenty-first, seventeen ninety-four, was a prominent Azerbaijani intellectual whose contributions spanned various fields including history, philosophy, and literature. As the son of Mirza Muhammad Khan II, the third khan of Baku, Bakikhanov was immersed in a rich cultural heritage that influenced his scholarly pursuits.
His military career saw him serve as an officer in the Imperial Russian Army, where he played a role in the Russo-Persian War from eighteen twenty-six to eighteen twenty-eight. Following his military service, he chose to retire in Quba, where he continued to engage in intellectual endeavors.
Bakikhanov is celebrated as one of the pioneering thinkers of Azerbaijan, credited with authoring the first scholarly monograph on the history of greater Shirvan, a region that would later form a significant part of the Republic of Azerbaijan. His work, Qanun-e Qodsi, is recognized as one of the earliest grammars of the Persian language, showcasing his linguistic prowess.
