Abbott Handerson Thayer, born on August twelfth, eighteen forty-nine, was a distinguished American painter, naturalist, and educator. Renowned for his captivating portraits, figures, animals, and landscapes, Thayer achieved notable recognition during his lifetime. His works are housed in major American art collections, showcasing his artistic prowess and contribution to the art world.

Thayer is perhaps most celebrated for his ethereal 'angel' paintings, many of which feature his own children as models. Their joint effort culminated in the publication of 'Concealing-Coloration in the Animal Kingdom,' first released by Macmillan in nineteen oh nine and later reissued in nineteen eighteen. This work, while influential, faced criticism from figures like Theodore Roosevelt for its premise that all animal coloration serves a cryptic purpose. Nevertheless, it is believed to have impacted military camouflage strategies during World War I.
