Abd al-Rahman IV

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Abd al-Rahman IV

Abd al-Rahman IV, born in the year one thousand, was a prominent figure in the political landscape of Al-Andalus, serving as the Caliph of the Umayyad state of Córdoba. His ascent to power came in the wake of the assassination of Ali ibn Hammud al-Nasir on 22 March 1018, a pivotal moment that set the stage for a turbulent succession.

Just six days after the assassination, Ali ibn Hammud's brother, Al-Qasim al-Ma'mun, made a claim to the throne. Concurrently, a group of conspirators, who had been plotting against Ali ibn Hammud, saw an opportunity in Abd al-Rahman IV, who was the grandson of the revered Abd al-Rahman III. They persuaded him to stake his claim to the caliphate.

On 29 April 1018, Abd al-Rahman IV was officially proclaimed caliph by the conspirators. However, his reign was marked by immediate challenges, as the legitimacy of his claim was contested by rival factions. Tragically, his rule was cut short when he was killed during a military campaign aimed at capturing Córdoba, highlighting the volatile nature of political power during this era.
