Abd al-Rahman of Morocco

Abd al-Rahman of Morocco, born in 1779, ascended to the throne as Sultan on 30 November 1822, following the death of his predecessor, Moulay Sulayman. A member of the esteemed 'Alawi dynasty' and the son of Moulay Hisham, he ruled until 28 August 1859, marking a significant period in Moroccan history.

During his lengthy reign, Abd al-Rahman demonstrated remarkable political acumen in a time when many African nations faced the threat of colonization by European powers. Notably, he managed to preserve Morocco's independence and maintain its territorial integrity, resisting pressures from stronger neighbors, including the French invasion of Algeria.

His leadership was characterized by a commitment to supporting Emir Abd al-Qadir's resistance against French forces in Algeria, showcasing his dedication to regional solidarity. Abd al-Rahman also engaged in numerous conflicts with European nations, particularly France, and signed treaties that reflected his strategic vision for Morocco's sovereignty.
