Abd al-Samad

Abd al-Ṣamad, also known as Khwaja 'Abd-us-Ṣamad Shirazi, was a prominent painter and illuminator born in the year fifteen hundred. His artistic journey led him from Persia to India, where he became a foundational figure in the Mughal miniature tradition during the sixteenth century.

From approximately fifteen fifty to fifteen ninety-five, Abd al-Ṣamad's career flourished under the Mughal Empire. His contributions to the art of Persian miniatures are well-documented, with numerous paintings attributed to him from this prolific period. His expertise and vision played a crucial role in the evolution of Mughal art.

By fifteen seventy-two, he took the helm of the imperial workshop under Emperor Akbar. It was during this time that the Mughal style reached its zenith, showcasing the intricate beauty and detail that characterized the era. Recent scholarship suggests that Abd al-Ṣamad may be the same individual as Mirza Ali, a Persian artist whose documented career coincides with the emergence of Abd al-Ṣamad in the Mughal court.
