Abdelmadjid Tebboune, born on November seventeenth, nineteen forty-five, is a prominent Algerian politician who has been serving as the president of Algeria since December two thousand nineteen. In addition to his presidential duties, he also holds the position of minister of defence, showcasing his significant influence in the country's governance.
Tebboune's political journey saw him rise to power following the tenure of former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika and the brief leadership of acting head of state Abdelkader Bensalah. His leadership marks a pivotal moment in Algerian history, especially after the passing of Liamine Zéroual in two thousand twenty-six, making him the only living former president of Algeria.
Before assuming the presidency, Tebboune served as the Prime Minister of Algeria for a short period from May to August in two thousand seventeen. His experience in government also includes a significant role as the minister of housing, a position he held from two thousand one to two thousand two and again from two thousand twelve to two thousand seventeen, demonstrating his long-standing commitment to public service and development.
