Abdirashid Shermarke

Abdirashid Shermarke, born on October 16, 1919, was a prominent figure in Somali politics, serving as the first Prime Minister of the Somali Republic from July 12, 1960, to June 14, 1964. His leadership during this formative period was crucial in shaping the newly independent nation.

Following his tenure as Prime Minister, Shermarke continued to play a vital role in the governance of Somalia. He ascended to the presidency on July 6, 1967, becoming the second individual to hold this esteemed position in the country.

Tragically, his presidency was cut short when he was assassinated on October 15, 1969. His untimely death marked a significant turning point in Somali history, leaving a legacy that continues to influence the nation today.
