Abdul Ahad Momand

Abdul Ahad Momand, born in nineteen fifty-nine, is a distinguished Afghan astronaut and former aviator of the Afghan Air Force. He holds the remarkable title of being the first, and currently the only, Afghan to venture into outer space. His historic journey took place in nineteen eighty-eight when he became a crew member of Soyuz TM-6, spending nine days aboard the Mir space station as an Interkosmos research cosmonaut.

Momand's achievements in space exploration are noteworthy. He made history by being the first individual to take the Quran into space, reciting it during his mission. This significant act not only highlighted his cultural heritage but also marked a momentous occasion as Pashto became the fourth language to be officially spoken in space when he communicated with his mother from orbit.
