Abdul Hakim Haqqani

Abdul Hakim Haqqani, born in 1967, is a prominent Afghan Islamic scholar and writer, currently serving as the chief justice of Afghanistan in the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan since 2021. His legal expertise and commitment to Islamic jurisprudence have positioned him as a key figure in the country's judicial landscape.

Haqqani's judicial career is marked by his previous role as the chief justice of the Supreme Court during the first Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. His deep involvement in the Taliban's governance and legal framework has made him a significant player in Afghanistan's tumultuous political history.

In addition to his judicial responsibilities, Haqqani has been instrumental in international diplomacy, serving as the chairman of the Taliban negotiation team in the Qatar office. His close association with the late Mullah Mohammed Omar, one of the founding members of the Taliban, underscores his longstanding influence within the organization.

However, his tenure has not been without controversy. In July 2025, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Haqqani, citing allegations of mistreatment of women under Taliban rule.
