Abdul-Karim Qasim

Abdul-Karim Qasim, born on November twenty-first, nineteen fourteen, was a prominent Iraqi military officer and statesman who played a pivotal role in the country's history. He rose to prominence as the Prime Minister and de facto leader of Iraq following the dramatic overthrow of the monarchy during the 14 July Revolution in nineteen fifty-eight. His leadership marked a significant shift in Iraq's political landscape, as he established a military regime that would last until his downfall in nineteen sixty-three.

During his tenure, Qasim was known for his strong opposition to foreign military presence in Iraq, which strained relations with both Iran and Western nations. His call for the annexation of Arab territories within Iran further complicated diplomatic ties, leading to increased tensions. Additionally, his leadership saw the rise of Kurdish rebellions in the north, fueled by external support from the United Arab Republic, which was wary of Qasim's alignment with Pan-Arab Nasserist factions.

Despite the challenges he faced, Qasim was popularly referred to as az-Zaʿīm, meaning 'The Leader,' reflecting his significant influence and the support he garnered from various segments of Iraqi society. However, his rule came to a tragic end during the Ramadan Revolution in nineteen sixty-three, when he was overthrown and executed, marking a tumultuous chapter in Iraq's history.
