Abdul-Rahman al-Bazzaz

Abdul-Rahman al-Bazzaz, born on February twentieth, nineteen thirteen, was a prominent Iraqi figure known for his multifaceted roles as a judge, politician, diplomat, university teacher, and writer. His political career peaked when he served as the Prime Minister of Iraq from nineteen sixty-five to nineteen sixty-six, and briefly as the interim president in nineteen sixty-six. A staunch pan-Arab nationalist, al-Bazzaz was dedicated to reforming the Iraqi government.

Before ascending to the role of Prime Minister, al-Bazzaz held the esteemed position of Dean of Baghdad Law College. His vision for Iraq centered on the professionalization of government, advocating for increased access to civilian expertise. This civic agenda, however, often came at the expense of military influence, reflecting his commitment to a more democratic governance.

Following the Ba'athist coup in nineteen sixty-eight, al-Bazzaz faced severe repercussions for his political beliefs. He was charged with participating in dissident activities against the regime, leading to his torture and imprisonment for a harrowing fifteen months. His release in nineteen seventy was prompted by illness, after which he relocated to London for medical treatment.

Abdul-Rahman al-Bazzaz's life came to a close in Baghdad on June twenty-eighth, nineteen seventy-three. His legacy as a reformist and advocate for civilian governance continues to resonate in the annals of Iraqi history.
