Abdullah Gül

Abdullah Gül, born on October twenty-ninth, nineteen fifty, is a prominent Turkish politician, diplomat, and economist. He served as the President of Turkey from two thousand seven to two thousand fourteen, marking a significant period in the nation's political landscape. Prior to his presidency, Gül held the position of Prime Minister for four months from two thousand two to two thousand three, and he concurrently served as both Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister from two thousand three until two thousand seven.

Gül's political journey began in the early nineties when he became a Member of Parliament for Kayseri in nineteen ninety-one, a position he was re-elected to multiple times. Initially affiliated with the Islamist Welfare Party, he transitioned to the Virtue Party in nineteen ninety-eight after the former was banned. His political evolution continued as he co-founded the Justice and Development Party (AKP) with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in two thousand one, advocating for reform and moderation within the party.

His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by significant achievements, including the removal of Erdoğan's political ban, allowing Erdoğan to assume office in a by-election. Gül's subsequent election as Turkey's first president with an Islamic political background was met with both support and opposition, particularly from secular factions within the country. His presidency was characterized by controversial legislative actions, including laws that sparked public protests and debates over constitutional integrity.

During his presidency, Gül faced criticism for endorsing laws perceived as unconstitutional, such as restrictions on alcohol consumption and increased political control over the judiciary. Despite these challenges, he adopted a mediating role during the Gezi Park protests, navigating the complexities of governance in a politically charged environment. Today, he continues to contribute to international dialogue as a member of the Advisory Panel for the President of the Islamic Development Bank.
