Abdullah Ibrahim

Abdullah Ibrahim, born Adolph Johannes Brand on 9 October 1934, is a distinguished South African jazz musician and composer. Known for his exceptional skills as a pianist and saxophonist, Ibrahim's music is deeply rooted in the rich cultural tapestry of his childhood in Cape Town's port areas. His diverse influences range from traditional African melodies and gospel music of the AME Church to Ragas and contemporary jazz, making him a pivotal figure in the Cape jazz subgenre.

Throughout his illustrious career, Ibrahim has drawn inspiration from jazz legends such as Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington. He is particularly celebrated for his iconic piece, 'Mannenberg,' which emerged as a powerful anti-apartheid anthem during a tumultuous period in South Africa's history.
