Abdullah Yusuf Azzam

Abdullah Yusuf Azzam was a prominent Islamist jihadist and theologian of Palestinian-Jordanian descent. Born in nineteen forty-one, he and his family fled the Jordanian-annexed West Bank following the Six-Day War in nineteen sixty-seven. They sought refuge in Jordan and Egypt for higher education before ultimately relocating to Saudi Arabia.

In nineteen seventy-nine, Azzam issued a significant fatwa that called for defensive jihad in response to the Soviet-Afghan War. This pivotal moment led him to Pakistan, where he dedicated himself to supporting the Afghan mujahideen. His influence grew as he became a mentor to Osama bin Laden, encouraging him to travel to Afghanistan to oversee the mujahideen efforts directly.

In nineteen eighty-four, Azzam and bin Laden co-founded Maktab al-Khidamat, an organization aimed at raising funds and recruiting fighters for the Afghan cause. Even after the Soviet withdrawal in nineteen eighty-nine, Azzam continued to advocate for jihadist militancy, earning him the title of the 'father of global jihad' in various jihadist circles. Tragically, his life was cut short when he was killed by a car bomb in Peshawar, Pakistan.

His legacy lives on through his son, Huthaifa Azzam, who asserts that the violent tactics employed by al-Qaeda, such as targeting civilians and kidnappings, would have been condemned by his father. Azzam's teachings and actions continue to resonate within the complex landscape of modern jihadism.
