Abel, born in the year twelve hundred eighteen, was a significant figure in Danish history, serving as Duke of Schleswig from twelve hundred thirty-two until twelve hundred fifty-two and ascending to the throne as King of Denmark in twelve hundred fifty. He was the son of Valdemar II and Berengaria of Portugal, and the brother of notable kings Eric IV and Christopher I.

His tenure as Duke was marked by conflict, particularly with his brother, King Eric IV. Abel was embroiled in controversy following Eric's murder in twelve hundred fifty, a crime for which he was suspected to have played a role. Despite these allegations, he took an oath to prove his innocence and was subsequently elected king.

Abel's reign, however, was tragically brief, lasting only until his death in twelve hundred fifty-two during a military expedition in Frisia. This made his rule the shortest of any Danish monarch since the ninth century.
