Abraham Flexner

Abraham Flexner, born on November 13, 1866, in Louisville, Kentucky, was a pioneering American educator whose influence reshaped medical and higher education in North America during the twentieth century.

After establishing and leading a college-preparatory school in his hometown, Flexner gained prominence with his 1908 publication, The American College: A Criticism. This critical assessment of the American educational landscape caught the attention of the Carnegie Foundation, which subsequently commissioned him to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of one hundred fifty-five medical schools across the United States and Canada.

The culmination of his research, known as the Flexner Report, was published in 1910 and became a catalyst for significant reforms in medical education, setting new standards that would influence the training of physicians for generations.

In 1930, Flexner founded the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, a prestigious institution that attracted some of the most brilliant minds in history, fostering an environment of intellectual collaboration and groundbreaking research.
