Abraham Ortelius

Abraham Ortelius, born on April 14, 1527, in Antwerp, was a pioneering cartographer, geographer, and cosmographer whose work laid the foundation for modern cartography. He is best known for creating the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which was published in 1570. This monumental work is often regarded as the official beginning of the Golden Age of Netherlandish cartography.

Ortelius was a prominent figure in the golden age of the Netherlandish school of cartography and geography, which flourished from the 1570s to the 1670s. Alongside notable contemporaries such as Gemma Frisius and Gerardus Mercator, he contributed significantly to the advancement of geographical knowledge during the age of discovery.

His innovative approach included the groundbreaking idea that continents were once joined together before drifting to their current positions. This theory not only showcased his forward-thinking mindset but also influenced future generations of geographers and cartographers.
