Abraham Wald

Abraham Wald, born on October thirty-first, nineteen hundred and two, was a distinguished Hungarian and American mathematician and statistician. His remarkable contributions spanned various fields, including decision theory, geometry, and econometrics. Wald is particularly renowned for founding the field of sequential analysis, which has had a lasting impact on statistical methodology.

During World War II, Wald's expertise was pivotal in addressing the challenges faced by bomber aircraft. He authored a significant statistical work that focused on minimizing damage to these aircraft, notably incorporating the concept of survivorship bias into his calculations. This innovative approach not only showcased his analytical prowess but also highlighted the importance of considering unseen data in decision-making processes.

Wald dedicated a substantial part of his research career to Columbia University, where he influenced countless students and fellow researchers.
