Abu al-Misk Kafur

Abu al-Misk Kafur, born in the year nine hundred and five, emerged as a formidable figure in the history of Ikhshidid Egypt and Syria. Originally a black slave, believed to be from Abyssinia or Nubia, his life took a dramatic turn when he was appointed vizier of Egypt. Following the death of his master, Muhammad bin Tughj, in nine hundred and forty-six, Kafur ascended to the role of de facto ruler, wielding significant power over the region.

His reign marked a pivotal era for the Ikhshidid domains, which encompassed Egypt and southern Syria, including the vital city of Damascus. Kafur's leadership lasted until his death in nine hundred and sixty-eight, during which he played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of the time.
