Abu al-Wafa' al-Buzjani

Abu al-Wafa' al-Buzjani, born on June tenth, nine hundred and forty, was a distinguished Persian mathematician and astronomer whose contributions significantly shaped the fields of mathematics and astronomy during the medieval period.

Residing in Baghdad, al-Buzjani made groundbreaking advancements in spherical trigonometry. His innovative work on arithmetic for merchants notably included the earliest recorded use of negative numbers in a medieval Islamic text, marking a pivotal moment in mathematical history.

In addition to his contributions to arithmetic, he is renowned for compiling comprehensive tables of sines and tangents at fifteen-degree intervals. His introduction of the secant and cosecant functions further enriched the study of trigonometry, as he explored the intricate relationships between the six trigonometric lines associated with an arc.

Al-Buzjani's influential work, the Almagest, became a cornerstone for medieval Arabic astronomers, remaining widely read for centuries after his passing. Although several of his other writings have not survived, his legacy continues to inspire mathematicians and astronomers alike.
